Mile End School

 A Health Promoting School

“A Health Promoting School is one in which all members of the school community work together to provide pupils with integrated and positive experiences and structures, which promote and protect health. This includes both the formal and informal curriculum in health, the creation of a safer and healthy school environment, the provision of appropriate health services and the involvement of the family and wider community in efforts to promote health.”

 World Health Organisation 1995

Mile End staff, pupils and parents have striven towards becoming a Health Promoting School for several years. This hard work was recognised in April 2007 when we were awarded Health Promoting School status at Commitment level and again in May 2008 at Commended level under the Grampian Health Promoting School Accreditation scheme.

Health Co-ordinator

Elaine Sykes, one of the Principal teachers at Mile End, has been Health Co-ordinator for a number of years and part of her PT responsibilities is to monitor, evaluate and further develop the Health curriculum and health related opportunities throughout school.

Health Working Group

There is a Health Working Group who supports Elaine in her role as co-ordinator. This consists of a member of the management team and a class teacher from each stage in school.

Health Working Group 2009/2010

 Co-ordinator: Elaine Sykes

SMT: Valerie Kidd

 Nursery: Gillian Innes

Infants: Claire Anderson

Juniors: Elaine Bain, Janet McRoberts

Seniors: Anne Meale

This is the core group, but there is consultation with Pupil Forum, school nurse, police liaison, Parent Council, Active Schools Co-ordinator and other professionals and outside agencies when appropriate.

 Health Promotion

Health promotion at Mile End is done formally through our health curriculum and PSHE programme and informally through pastoral care of staff, pupils and parents. There are a number of activities, which happen annually in school but there are also one off events, which we participate in. You can find out what is happening by looking at the Active Schools notice board and the Health Promoting School notice board inside the front door.
