Eco Team Action Plan        2007/2008

 Our main aim this year is to gain our silver award as an Eco school. We hope to build on and maintain the work done in attaining our bronze award and implementing some new initiatives throughout this session.

School grounds

 

 

As the school is moving to a new site in 2009, new items/initiatives for improving the school grounds would have to be ideas/items we could move to the new site.

 Ongoing discussions with Beechwood staff/3Rs meeting.

Encourage pupils to use playground markings donated by the PTA.

 Buddies/KIC trainers support playground games

Investigate how the Eco team could improve the Nursery garden. Discuss with Nursery staff/Mr Carnegie.

Paper towel slogans “Why use two, when one will do” given and displayed in each classroom.

Pupils and staff reminded to use scrap paper rather than using new paper when appropriate.

Weekly collection of paper/cardboard by the Eco team. Each member has allocated rooms. Mr Mundie/Miss Jackson to supervise at “blue” bin. Amount of paper collected recorded weekly and displayed on notice board.

Christmas card recycling. After last years success, Midstocket Matters, the local news publication, will advertise the school recycling Christmas cards. Containers will be left in school grounds for the community and the school to use during the first two weeks in January.

 Starlight charity took over - each pupil wrote a Christmas message on a decoration to the class/friends and paid £1 to charity.

Plastic Fantastic – through school competition involving pupils/families gathering and cleaning used plastic bottles and tops. Waste Aware to loan us 15 recycling boxes for each classroom. (Nursery to use a bigger container). Each class will create a model/mural relevant to their class topic or a stand-alone idea. Each class’s creation will be on display on Open Day.

 Very successful event - each class given special recognition for their efforts.  Good media coverage too.

Energy

 

Each class will select it’s own Energy monitor. They will be responsible for the switching off of lights, shutting down of PC/Laptops etc. in their own classroom. Members of the Eco team will be responsible for other areas in the school.

Mr Carnegie to ensure the front and back doors are closed throughout the school day. This will ensure the heat is kept in and the boiler, which works on a thermostat, will not be used needlessly.

Litter

 

 

This is an ongoing message being promoted by staff and pupils throughout the whole school. Assemblies will be used to reinforce this message, as will the Eco team talking to classes.

Litter Pickers from P5 help Mr Carnegie every lunchtime to ensure the playground is kept litter free both from pupils and seagulls! A suggestion from the Eco team about changing the name of “Litter Pickers” to “Eco Eagles” will be discussed with the P5s. If they agree to this, the Eco team will make up some sort of badge for the group to wear.

Pupils encouraged not to waste water and report any faulty water fountains or toilet facilities immediately.

Work closely with the Health Working group. Co-operate and assist with any initiatives being organised by the HWG. School is in the process of applying for their 2nd accreditation and Eco team will play a part in this.

Health Working Group has devised a Travel plan for the school. This will be an ongoing initiative and will require regular monitoring and updating.

Zig Zag line campaign – school competition to think up a slogan for a banner to be placed on the school gates, raising awareness of road safety.

Biodiversity

 

As part of P6/7 Science pupils take part in a series of activities highlighting the need to look after the planet. P6 pupils produce posters informing others about renewable energy. These will be displayed in the school.

 Eco week very successful - P6s enjoyed activities and winning "company" got to visit Pizza Express as their prize.

BP has generously donated A day full of Energy project kits to be used with younger classes in the school.

 

BP link officer to visit and give workshops on saving energy and other specific activities.

Reinforce use of playground markings through Buddies system, KIC Trainers and the Friendship Stop.

Each class have access to white bag or a scrap paper tray. Each class teacher will help promote this throughout the session.

New initiative with Christmas cards. Eco team/Pupil Forum work together to contact the charity Starlight. This will involve pupils donating £1 and writing a message on a decoration for a class tree. We could potentially be saving 150,000 cards from being used.

Dragons’ Den – whole school competition. Pupils will be given the opportunity to design and make their own draught excluder. Each class will select a winning entry and they will be given a 2-minute slot in front of a panel of “Dragons” to convince them it is the best design. The overall winner will then be mass-produced and sold during the school picnic, with proceeds going to the Eco fund. Local DIY companies and Education Officers to be involved in the project.

Litter

 

 

This is an ongoing message being promoted by staff and pupils throughout the whole school. Assemblies will be used to reinforce this message, as will the Eco team talking to classes.
